2 Things To Plan For If You Want To Bury A Shipping Container

Posted on

There are a lot of people who are worried about the end of the world as they know it. Those people are looking for things that they can use to create bunkers or safe places for their families to go when something happens. Many people choose to go with old shipping containers. Those crates are generally big enough that they can make a good emergency shelter. Many people choose to bury the shipping containers underground so that the bunkers are hidden. If you want to buy a shipping container and bury it as a bunker, there are things that you need to do in order to make it safe.

Air Circulation

One thing you need to do is make sure that have adequate air circulation. If you are going to be underground for any amount of time, you are going to use up the oxygen in the bunker and fill the air up with carbon monoxide pretty quickly. One way to make sure that doesn't happen is to have a way to circulate the air from outside. You can have a fan that is connected to a tube that will help pull air down into the bunker and have an exhaust fan that sends air the other way. You can make sure that you have very strong filters on the air intake and exhaust ports so that nothing dangerous can get into your bunker.

Bracing

You will want to make sure that your bunker has the proper bracing. While shipping containers are quite strong, they do need to have some additional bracing so that they will hold up to the dirt that you will be putting on them. Dirt can get really heavy, especially if you are going to bury the container deep. There are different ways that you can brace your container. One way is that you can pour a concrete form to set it in. That would be something like a concrete box that you can then set the container in before pouring a cap. Another option is to build some bracing inside the container. You can do something like bracing that you would see in a mine. You can create arches that help to distribute the stress down from the top to the bottom.

If you are worried about the end of the world as you know it, you may be looking at buying and burying a shipping crate. Knowing some of the things you should do with it can make your decision easier. Depending on what sort of crates or storage you may need for in the bunker you create, you may also benefit from contacting a company like Portland Packaging Co Inc to learn more about crate options.
